  • What happens on a 1-2-1 workshop with Ross?

The principal aim of the day is that you develop your photographic skills in order to benefit your photography long term. However, with tuition taking place entirely on location, hopefully you will also return from the day with some great shots. Normally, the day will start with a quick cuppa and short technical briefing. The rest of the day will be spent in the field, covering the aspects of photography relevant to you. Locations can be decided through discussion with Ross. Being based in the South West of England, you will benefit from a wide choice of truly stunning locations, including the rugged Cornish coastline, North Devon, Dartmoor and Exmoor. More experienced photographers may simply want Ross to guide them to the best, most photogenic locations in the area, with minimal instruction. Weather depending, the day will finish at dusk. 1-2-1 tuition is for up to eight hours of instruction – therefore, during the summer months, there may be a short break in the middle of the day.

  • What level do I need to be?

Any level. Ross is experienced at teaching photographers of all abilities – from complete beginner to aspiring professionals.

  • How much does the day cost?

For a full day (minimum of 8-hours tuition) the cost is £325.00. Alternatively, why not share the day (and expense) with a friend or two? A day’s tuition for two people is £375.00, while tuition for three is £425.00.

  • What do I need to bring?

An SLR, Compact System or Bridge camera, a range of focal lengths (ideally, from wide-angle to medium telephoto), film/digital memory, tripod and whatever filters and accessories you already have. Also bring suitable clothing and footwear. Please note: if required, Ross can lend you Lee filters and a sturdy tripod during the day.

  • What happens once I have booked and paid my deposit?

Ross will contact you directly to discuss your requirements, potential locations, subject choice, and to arrange a mutually convenient date.

  • What if the weather is bad on the day?

If, a day or two beforehand, the forecast looks wet/poor, the day can be rearranged for an alternative, mutually convenient, date.

  • It’s a rare combination – being both a talented photographer and a patient teacher – but Ross has both skills in abundance. I am a basic level photographer, but interested in learning more. On my 1-2-1 training day Ross was patient and yet pushed me further gently in camera and composition skill than I would have thought possible in a few hours. He’s great. And best of all he is really nice to be with. If you are thinking of booking, don’t hesitate. I have no hesitation in recommending him. You’ll have fun, and learn a lot.

  • I have had two 1-2-1 workshops with Ross and can honestly say I learnt more about photography in that brief time, than I had in the previous 5 years! Ross is great at sharing his expert knowledge, in a way that is easy to understand and implement. He’s also infinitely patient and his local knowledge is second to none.

Truly enjoyed myself and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the workshops, either for yourself, or as a gift. They’re suitable for complete novices, or the enthusiastic amateur! Already looking to book my 3rd visit…

  • I booked a workshop with Ross about 18 months ago when I knew virtually nothing about photography. Ross was very patient and took the time to ask me what I wanted to get out of my photography, he then spent time showing me how to use my camera and settings so that I started to understand what f/stops were and more importantly how to get off auto settings!
By the end of that day we had visited some really great locations and I was using my camera with a lot more confidence. By the end of our packed day the photography ‘bug’ had well and truly taken hold!
Ross has a relaxed, patient but very informative style of teaching. Ross certainly made sure I understood one subject before moving onto the next.
I cannot recommend Ross highly enough and would advise anyone of any level to take the plunge and book a 1-2-1 before he is to busy too fit you in!

  • I have worked with Ross many times on his 1-2-1 days and have always found his approach towards photography and teaching inspiring. Ross is a true gentleman and will guide you through the art of taking pictures without confusion leading to an end result of better images. I have now made a friend in Ross and continue to learn from him. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending his approach to learning.

  • Ross has been pivotal in my development as a photographer.  He has helped me go from happy shooter to experienced photographer. Each 1-2-1 session I’ve had with Ross was tailored to my needs allowing me to make the most of his skills as an educator and photographer.  I always finish a 1-2-1 having learned something new that results in a positive impact to my skills as a photographer. Ross is very personable making each session fun as well as educational.  I can’t recommend tuition with Ross enough!

  • I've been on a couple of 1-2-1 workshops with Ross and have another booked already. Brilliant days where I have learnt loads and had great fun too. Taking photos surrounded by beautiful scenery in different weather and light conditions has been a fantastic learning process. Ross is a great teacher and and I can thoroughly recommend his courses.

  • I’ve just had a 3-day 1-2-1 with Ross. Although a relative beginner, I never felt intimated by Ross’s knowledge. Ross was great too work with and passed on his tips and experience with breath-taking ease and in a way that was easily understood. He was at all times helpful and friendly... and nothing was ever a chore for him. When you are on a ‘1-2-1’ type of course there are really two main elements. Firstly, the technical knowledge of the instructor, but to frank I don't see any great advantage in waffling on about Ross's technical expertise, as he is clearly at the top of his game. Secondly, and for me (and I’m guessing others) more importantly, what is this guy like too work with? Are we going to get on and work well together? But Ross is a fabulously nice guy – it is as simple as that. I cannot imagine anyone not getting on with him. So, how would I sum up? My own experience was great. Working with a class photographer, good teacher and really nice guy. Does it get any better I ask myself? Probably not. I will certainly find an excuse to go and work with Ross again!
